By the time this gets published, I will have very likely reached 1000 edits on OpenStreetMap.
Considering that I've had the account for 6 years, 1000 edits doesn't sound that impressive, but, given the context that I didn't start contributing until the end of 2023, I don't think it is too bad. As to why I didn't start contributing until four years after I created the account, that is a very good question that I do not have the answer to.
I have this vague memory of finding "Street Complete" on F-Droid and wanting to contribute to the "gamified" map updater-thing. For whatever reason, I never did submit/publish any of my changes.
When trying to think what sparked my interest again back in 2023, all searching online for some very vague terms that were somewhat related to OpenStreetMap/privacy in general. I do think that the privacy aspect of things played a large part in it, it was around then that I started paying even more attention to what I was using on a daily basis and how big companies were tracking everything I do.
Over the past two years, I've done a decent amount of different things when it comes to contributing to the map. My biggest project has been trying to map my hometown of Gqberha, South Africa (OSMCha). Growing up I have vivid memories of Google Maps being multiple years out of date, then when looking at the state of the map on OpenStreetMap, it wasn't any better (if anything a lot worse). Since starting that around December of 2023, I've made a decent amount of progress, but, I definitely underestimated how much work it is.
In between chipping away at that, I tend to do a lot of mobile mapping. When I'm heading out, I'll try and use CoMaps to navigate around. If I come across something that doesn't seem right or just isn't found, I'll have a look at trying to improve it on the spot (e.g. updating address details), however, that isn't always possible, in which case, I will use OsmAnd to create a note and tackle it later on my PC. I recently started working in an office again, and have been doing this on my bus commute in and out of work. There have been so many things that need updating or improving in some way that it has actually shocked me. For example, houses that don't have address details, or new apartments that haven't been tagged yet.
Here's to another 6 years of mapping and many many more edits.
